I See You Are a Ron Paul Supporter?
Not long ago someone from the Ron Paul Presidential Campaign contacted me and we got to discussing his candidacy and discussed if indeed he was a viable contender. So, I asked them up front: I see you are a Ron Paul supporter, so tell me, in a nutshell, how would you describe him and his vision for our nation.
Why did I bother to ask? Well, I have heard some good things, and even seen some folks on street corners with signs, so the Grass Roots thing seems to be happening all over the place. What else can you tell me about him? The TV Media is giving him some time, but not as much as the others. I did see a Mobile Campaign Mobile Motor Home in California, when I was there last, I think it was passing thru? His staunch supporter replied in an email to me:
Ron Paul has been a congressman for 20 years. In that time, he always voted in accordance with upholding the constitution, which is what he took office for. He voted against the Iraq war and the Patriot act, as well as many other bills that violate our constitutional rights. He never voted to raise his own salary or raise taxes. He has been married to the same woman for 50 years, and has demonstrated that he is a man of integrity in everything he does. He would bring the troops back from Iraq and every country, wanting to get out of our interventialist habit, which totally goes against our constitution. I appreciate Ron Paul because he has a big heart–he really cares–but he is guided by the Constitution, which is not perfect, but it is all we have. Lobbyist’s won’t visit him because he isn’t supporting the monied interests. He encourages dialogue and conflict resolution.
Interesting, my personal thoughts are that if we could trust the bureaucracy a little bit more then the Constitution could use a little very carefully chosen small changes for the present period and moving forward. Regarding the monied interests, well, I bet the lobbyists wouldn’t have visited Adam Smith either. It kind of sounds like Ron Paul leans a little towards a more live and let live approach “libertarian’ish” which I think is where I find myself often leaning when I look at the spendthrift ways of our government.
Since, my brother is just back in the states from Iraq, gets out of the USMC soon, I am sure he will have lots of stories to tell, which I will digest after he gets out. I see Ron Paul wants to bring all the troops home immediately, I am not sure even my brother things that is viable, but I understand why Ron Paul is saying that as a strict Constitutionalist.
My further questions about Ron Paul are; How does the Republican Party treat Ron Paul, do they see him as a thorn in their side or an outsider, renegade? How is he overcoming the political machine? Is he taking it to the people and not worrying about it? And the reason that I ask these things is that, without the larger support, how on Earth can he win?
It seems with his one day campaign fund record intake (4 million dollars), that he is a viable candidate at least for the first few states of campaigning, but Iowa could be a washout for him. Of course, everyone loves the underdog, at least for a while. It seems from what his supporters are telling me, Ron Paul is not a puppet and so much of this his positions on things do not seem to enter his steadfast attitude or convictions. So, if he is a threat to the status quo, well that’s good, keeps them on their toes. So, we shall see if Ron Paul can pull himself into the race in the future. Meanwhile, this is an interesting case study on grassroots politics in the US.
