Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will take supporters of Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul at the August Republican convention later this year.

Mr. Santorum, who on Friday announced the formation of a conservative group, said he would support attempts of his backers to build support for conservative policies. Speaking to reporters Friday at a conference, Mr. Santorum said his supporters are ready for “a fight” in Tampa.

“I want to make sure that our delegates have an opportunity to come, many of these folks were great volunteers and workers for us and I want to make sure they have the opportunity to experience that convention, and we have other candidates who have delegates coming who, let’s put it this way, may have a different approach, particularly to the platform,” said Mr. Santorum. “Some of the other issues that are going to be discussed at the convention. I want to make sure that the folks who represent the values that I did during this campaign are also are able to come to that convention and have their voices heard.”

The former Pennsylvania U.S. senator encourage voters to support for Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee. Still, he added that he and Mr. Romney have a number of differences in terms of policy.

‘I certainly have encouraged everyone to support Governor Romney as I have, but there are a lot of other issues at the convention other than just voting for the nominee,” said Mr. Santorum.

Mr. Santorum’s comment comes as Mr. Paul remains in the race for the Republican nomination. The Texas congressman announced in May that he would no longer challenge Mr. Romney’s bid for the 2012 nomination, adding that he would continue to meet with supporters ahead of the August convention.

Mr. Paul, a candidate who advocates for a non-interventionist foreign policy and drug decriminalization, recently told supporters his delegate count puts him “in a tremendous position to grow our movement and shape the future of the GOP.”

Supporters of Mr. Paul have turned out in full force at a number of state conventions. Supporters of Mr. Paul have widely expressed discontent with Mr. Romney’s campaign, calling for stringent deficit reduction measures and a reduce role for the Federal Reserve in determining economic policy in the U.S.
