Ron Paul Condemns Assassination of al-Awlaki – Forbes

Sep 30, 2011

I’m not surprised that Congressman Ron Paul of Texas has condemned the US Government’s assassination of American citizen and Islamic radical, Anwar al-Awlaki. This fits his general anti-interventionist framework.

What amuses me is the headline at MSNBC where it’s being reported:

Notice the scare quotes around the word assassinating. Because, you know, when the US government kills one of its own citizens in a country far, far away even though he wasn’t engaging in any sort of armed combat, that’s obviously not a real assassination…it’s just an “assassination.” I’m sure Paul made scare quotes when he said that.

I want to clarify my biased-media post from below. I think the media is biased, but more important than the Fox News liberal vs. conservative divide is the fact that the mainstream media is by and large a pro-corporate, pro-war, pro-status-quo institution. It’s not as fractured as we think either. The big news outlets are all saying essentially the same thing. Fox just does it through a pro-Republican lens.

Oh, I’m sorry, I meant a pro “Republican” lens.
