Ron Paul follows Iowa straw poll win with 3rd place finish in latest Iowa poll – The State Column
Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, followed his first place finish in a straw poll on Saturday with a third place finish in The Des Moines Register’s latest Iowa poll on the same day. Paul garnered 12 percent of the votes to finish in the top three. A telephone interview with 400 likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers was conducted between October 23 and 26. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
Pizza magnate Herman Cain beat former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to win first place with 23 percent of the votes. Minnesota Congressman Michele Bachmann, who won the Ames Straw Poll in August, took fourth place with 8 percent of the votes. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Governor Rick Perry tied for fifth place with 7 percent of the votes.
Several of the GOP candidates have made significant strides since The Des Moines Register’s last Iowa poll in June, while others have fallen out of favor with Iowa voters. In June, a Des Moines Register poll of Iowa Republican caucusgoers found Bachmann in second place with 22 percent of the votes. Paul, on the other hand, tied Gingrich for fourth place with 7 percent of the votes. Paul’s support has risen 5 percentage points since June. Cain, who finished in third place with 10 percent of the votes in June, has skyrocketed 13 percentage points to take first in the latest Iowa poll.
Paul continues to demonstrate his ability to rally his supporters to various straw polls throughout the nation. Over the weekend, Paul won a straw poll at the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA) convention in Des Moines, Iowa. Paul garnered 82 percent of the straw poll votes cast by Iowans. Cain finished in second place with 14.7 percent of the votes and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum took third with 1 percent of the votes. Paul also pulled in the most votes cast by non-Iowans in the NFRA straw poll. Paul’s straw poll victories in October include first place finishes at the Values Voter Summit straw poll and an Ohio Republican straw poll.
